Beyonce costs South Africa R17 million

News of Beyoncé coming to South Africa later this year for the second Annual South African Sports Awards has become a hot topic on the social network platforms.  Minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula revealed his plan of wanting to bring Beyoncé South Africa on Kaya FM a few weeks ago. Mr Mbalula brought a jarring mix of American film and music stars that included Brandy Norwood, Vivica A Fox and Regina King to perform and present at last year’s awards. The event was held at the Sun City Resort in North West on August 21 and reportedly cost R46 Million.

Mbalula is indulging his need for a lavish lifestyle with the tax payer’s money and what has Beyoncé got to do with the South African Sport Awards? South African government is supposed to develop local artists not give money to the established musicians like Beyoncé Knowles. In South Africa we have a vast of talented musicians who still need to grow and becoming popular like Beyoncé. This feels like a slap in the face of South African musicians, for not being appreciated by the government or for such concerts such as SA Sport Awards. What does this have to say for our country, what image is the government portraying to the young upcoming musicians; does this mean that in South Africa we don't have enough talent to showcase on the South African Awards. So why bring international stars to present themselves to what belongs to us who are already rich?

What happened to building sports courts and fields on our school for youth development what happened to building sports facilities in communities that need those most to get these kids off the streets? The media plays a major role in promoting local and international musicians. This clearly shows that the government Public Relations is poor, how can you appoint or hire people who does nothing for your country at such an exorbitant amount, while you can invest on more important things.
Instead of wasting so much money, that money can be donated to the Roads Agency for the e-tolling system, buy school books for Limpopo's children, build schools. I mean, the list of positive sustainable things you could with that money is endless, but thanks to Mbalula who wants to throw that away. What is your take on Mr Mbalula paying Beyoncé R17 million for an hour's work when we have so many artists in SA?

  1. There are so many important things out there that need serious attention,Beyonce coming to South Africa is not one of them really. We need to set our priorities straight.

    1. I must say, that our government does not care about the needs of the citizens and other impotant things. There's a lot that can be done with the money that is being wasted on less important things such as bringing Beyonce to Mzansi, instead they do so and I think that they just want o rub thei sholders to the international RNB star, Beyonce Knowles. I doubt that they know anything about setting priorities, all they care about is to spend tax payers' money in selfish way...

  3. the government should really get their priorities straight.Beyonce is not worth all the drama, there is a lot that can be done with such an amount of cash.

    1. I doubt that the government even knows what priorities are, except fulfilling their lavish lifestyles at our expense

  4. Beyonce is an expensive brand. The government knew she wasn't gonna be cheap but still they're willing to cough out 17million of which it could be used for something better. But then they're looking for something glamorous and that's exactly what they're going for.

    1. This brings me to a question about, what are you going to do as the tax payer and how do you feel about all of this... Especially that our artists are being taken for granted

  5. Image is everything, let Beyonce grace SA with her presence and we shall be put on the map hey (publicity I say)! Mbalula is thinking strategically, this will enhance chances of SA going into musical engagements with overseas based stars! Progress right there lol

    1. I guess i'll have to disagree with you... This is just what I call personal satisfaction at people's expense, don't you think. We not going to get anything out out this except for that two-day publicity. How many our music stars have engaged internationally when it comes to music. Last year we had Brandy Norwood but what did we get and who any of our stars have been taken to america only just to perfom as the US awards, Ziltch...

    1. You know Grace, with South Africa, I think its always about supporting international talent and paying less attention to what we already have locally

  7. i think someone needs to speak sense into the minister's mind, developing south africa's sports and teams are poorly financed and have difficulties in finding sponsors, why not finance S.a sports with that 17 Million because the government even said that there is not enough budget for sports but there is enough to give away

    1. YEs there is enough to give beyonce knowles...who knows nothing about SA sports. I think the minister wants to rub his shoulders with the music sensation without paying attention to what we need the most here in South Africa.

  8. its just a shame to South Africa, because beyonce has nothing to lose, but poor Mbalula who can not think for the citizens of South Africa who are paying lot of tax for leaders to play with their money. I mean really they are lots of talented musicians in South Africa who are in need of money, Why can't they give them a chance?

    1. You know I actually think that with R17 million they could do lot of things sush as; empowering youth to start their own businesses, build schools even buy books for Limpopo kids. A half of that exorbitant amount could pay more than 100 artists that we have in SA... But they want to give money to a person like Beyonce who is already rich while our artists die having nothing

  9. I really believe honorable Mbalula is trying to bring entertaiment home as the youngest minister in South Africa,so he will always do what he believes will make the youth of this country happy. But Indeed 17 million is a lot of money that could have been invested in South African sports particulaly for the schools and universities around SA.

    1. Yes he want to bring entertainment, but at such high cost without considering dire financial constraints that we are going through here in South Africa. I also think that his daughters are big fans of Beyonce...so they asked daddy over some family dinner to bring they miss **B**, I don't understand why is the minister is so less considerate, while others die of hunger and poverty. He is a good daddy to his daughter by making sure that he fulfil their needs...

    1. Hey Pebetse, I don't think that even a single AFRICAN artist could get that much, for one hour work, especially form america not to mention other continents...this is not fair, I mean with the money that Beryonce is going to get, we could change lives of many South Africans who are in dire financial constraints

  11. That is actually true, this type of action tells South African musicians that they can not sing better than those from outside countries.I think that the government is actually telling the young up-coming stars not to bother into going to music world because they will never be given a good chance such as this one to prove themselves.

  12. What did we expect, ofcause Beyonce is bound to be that expensive , she is a well known artist that is loved by everyone around the world, she doesnt come cheap. Lets just hope its not out tax money that is going to be used to pay her.

  13. 17 Million is money that could be used to better our countries social and economic inequalities. If our government has that much money to spend then why do South Africans owe some R1.3-trillion in consumer debt as according to Rajeen Devpruth, manager of statistics at the National Credit Regulator? Debt is a big problem, there is still a huge unemployment rate in areas like Diepsloot. Without a doubt South African government is supposed to develop local artists. The publicity to be supposedly created is not worth sacrificing our fellow south Africans quality of lives.

  15. These people in government have too much power and take too much advantage of the money that belongs to the citizens of SA. People are struggling out there and he can make the rich even richer and leave the poor to starve.

  16. Well we must forget about publicity that can be obtained in this event and focus on social issues in ther country. Surely that money can improve many peoples live.

  17. yes , the money can do better things than just to entertain people who are hungry, who are shelterless. These people are really not thinking

  18. i honestly think minister fikile mbalula knows what he is doing...he cannot just wake up and decide Beyonce...he knows fans are crazy about beyonce chances are the turn out and mileage for this event will be three times that what he will pay for the booty hoop queen

  19. This has two sides first of all Beyonce was chosen because it is known that she will by no doubt make amazing ticket sales, create huge publicity for the country as a whole. secondly we are still a deveolping country so why must we waste such kind of money on Beyonce instead of taking our local artisits and paying them in that way the money is still withn our country. i think the public should be given a platform to air their views abt this issue
