Gender based violence facing women can be stopped

The recent story on the news currently about the 17-years old girl from Braamfischer, in Soweto, Johannesburg, who was allegedly gang-raped by seven boys aged between 14-20 years old, has touched me a lot because its a cruelest torture anyone could imagine. Well in South Africa, sexual abuse are serious problems that transcend racial, economic, social and regional lines. Sexual abuse is frequently directed towards female and the youth, but it can happen to anyone. Adolescents and young women in particular may experience abuses in the form of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, sexual exploitation and female genitals mutilation.

The article I read recently by "Sowetan Live" clearly states that the most disgusting and humiliating part is the video that was later posted to youtube, where anyone can see it. The video clearly shows faces, genitals and several acts of penetration which are clearly visible and her attackers can be heard offering her R2 in exchange for her silence. I mean what is this? Surely they do not have respect and I blame their parents for their behaviour. We need anti-rape and non-violence campaigns in our society that can contextualise a difference regarding this issue and help rape crisis on our knowledge base that could provide an effective service to survivors who go through no secondary trauma also know as Post-Traumatic Disorder (PTD) and their trial to completion.  What perception does this issue creates to the society and to children still growing?

Gender based violence is a significant public health problem which impacts women, men and children. Little is known about the correlation based on this issue in South Africa. There is a body called "Sonke Gender Justice" which is a non-profit organisation based in South Africa, working throughout Africa to promote gender equality and prevent the spread of HIV also fighting for human rights as well as ensuring healthy and happy relationships to men, women and children.

If you think that rape can never happen to you, think again, you have a choice to support anti-rape and violence campaigns because you might not know what might happen to you. The power lies in you hands to stop this. Are you ready to fight this horror?

Rape is wrong.I also feel that even though media had to make us aware of the incident, it should'nt have went as far as publishing it on youtube.Instead the media can use billboards to make people specially males, that Rape is wrong. That would be a good campaign is stoping violance on woman and children.

  2. This is really heart breaking seriously no one should go through waht that poor girl has gone through and all this should come to an end gender based violence has gone to far especially to a point were young kids are not seeing what wrong they are doing to another person and feels that it was right. In your opinion what do you think promotes these children to feel that these crimes are accepted or ok and how can this be changed?

    1. it is really heart breaking and I agree with you that no one deserves to be treated in such a way. I think that the main factor that promotes these children to feel that such crimes are accepted, is the media and their parents who don't talk to them about certain things, and the only way this can be changed about such behaviour is for parents to sit down and talk to their children about what is accepted in the society and what are the outcomes. And there is this say, that says, "Charity begins at home" if you teach your kids to treat others with respect while they are still young, they will certainly do that

    1. I think the reason women, are always victims of rape is because they are seen powerless and not powerful enough to stand up for themselves, that is why men always take advantage and they need to be stopped

  4. We still have time to do something about the people who are raping woman. Where does a 14 year old get the guts to do something like this? As a practitioner, I say we go around the world campaign about such behaviour.

    1. They get the guts from the media, such as "music video, movies and dramas", they make sex looks ok and funny. That is why I am saying that explicit clips on TV shouldn't be broadcasted because it has effect to the kids' minds

    1. I feel sorry for the girl too and wish that there was something I can do to help her. I am so sure that those boys were intoxicated, I mean it is impossible for a 14 year old to rape someone, and I must say, the world is really coming to an end

  6. I'm proud of our country for getting angry and upset, but now what we need to do is to take action, we need the accused to take responsibility and explain their actions they can't just go to prison they must explain themselves to the country. I'm also upset with the fact that youtube allowed for this video to stay online until it beacame viral and the fact that it became viral also upsets me what is this saying about our society.

    1. I don't blame youtube, it is a video sharing site and I don't think its their responsibitlity to check what is being uploaded online, I mean take this as an exapmle, people post nude pictures on facebook and that is not a big issue because its just media. And yes those guys must explain themselves very well about what they were thinking to do such a thing

    1. Yes, rape is not easy to forget but I think that if she goes for counselling and therapy she will be ok. I am disappointed that those rapists are not men enough, its boys who suppose to be at school. Its really shocking to see that children can commit such a crime

    1. These are the kind of kids Patricia De Lille and the Human Rights commission were shedding ears over a few years ago - being held in prison with adults and not having the comforts of home. I hope they are put away for a long time because they are hardcore criminals in the making

  9. This morning a teenager girl committed suicide, because they were forcing her to get married to a men who raped her, just imagine the pain.I say NO! to women and children abuse.

    1. Parents are also the cause of abuse, I mean how can you force your child to marry a rapist, does that mean that they accepting the fact that the man raped their daughter, what kind of parents could do such a thing. This needs to be stopped with serious campaigns

    1. I'm sooo disgusted by what these kids did. Parents need to teach their kids morals, respect of another human being or living thing in that matter and more morals. These kids acted like wild animals.. our society is really phucked. Are we gonna sit and blame this on Apartheid as well? We need brothers and sisters to do something. Commiting sexual acts and violant acts in front of kids lead to this. This is heartbreaking really. I hope the girl gets proper treatment and healing and the boys be locked up for good. Our country is cruel

  11. well it is very sad that statistics of rape and abuse in our country are just not decreasing any time soon. the thing that these boys did to this young girl is very painful as it is also said that this girl might be mentally disturbed, wOrst of all to upload it on YOUTUBE????

    1. I ask myself, how did this get to go this far? The answer is on this blog post article about the girl who was filmed and went viral, forced to confront the horror of her life, forcing South Africa to confront the horrors of its rape crisis. The government, police and justice system appearently have no interest in investigating these crimes until the world sees them. Coruption at its best.
That is why I am saying that we need to get up and do something to stop rapists before they reach the highest number of their targets

  12. This is really touching Loyiso, we talking about cruelity at its best, who can do such babaric and evil to sick person like that child, i don't mean to say those that are not mentally disturbed deserve the abuse but where is the societal love if parents don't teach their children respect of others? that child deserves to be loved and taken care of and the society must also play a role in loving her.

    ReplyDelete

    1. So touching indeed, this is a heartless crime. Parents are to be blamed for not teaching their kids, thats why communities need to have centres that will teach young kids to respect others and human dignity, but the bigger question is who will bring that change to these kid and ociety in general

  13. Im so ashamed of those fourteen year old boys for raping at that age. I worry what crimes they will be doing in years to come. This is an infuriating story for us woman.

    1. is the most disgusting and humiliating as well intimidating story about our country. What do you think might be the impact of this to future generations to come and how can it be avoided. Our government needs to intervene and make sure that rapists don't get to walk freely while causing more damage to our society.

  14. what a horrorable story it is i mean the guys who raped her have no morals i can imagine what it was for her but i can believe that even a 14 year old was involved what are our brothers being tought where is the respect

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Respect is very important nowadays because if you underestimate people you end up doing something to hurt them the most, as for this rape incident about 7 boys who took an advantage over the poor girl, I am still saying that the law has to take its cause and they are supposed to be prosecuted, evn life sentence, they deserve it so that other prospective rapists have this perception in mind that crime does not pay, instead you get to rot behind bars, I mean rape, rape is against got and its a sexual sin in the face of the Lord

  15. Yeh...working together we can,but as said that the age group is between 14-20 i can say it is all possible because of peer pressure, and beside children are so exposed to lot of stuff and different things and at the end of the day they are just teens who do not know anything but being used by the devil.Parents should start to put more effort on raising their children and I hope and believe that from today on our mothers have learned a lesson so they will take their daughters seriously, teaching them how to face teen and youth stage.I am saying this because parents turn to give up on their children just because of mistake forgeting that they are just growing kids who needs to be guided.

    1. I have to disagree with you when you say "it is all possible because of peer pressure", peer pressure does not push anyone to commit such crime

  16. I think we need to love each other as brothers and sisters, and not forget our ethics, and we need to be reminded, that respect is part of our culture. i mean if you are only 16 years old and you are a rapist where is UBUNTU?

    ReplyDelete

    1. You know I don't think our brothers and sisters understand the meaning of UBUNTU, they just do things that cripple somebody's dignity and confidence.

  17. I hate the fact that we live in a society that teaches women and kids how to NOT to get raped instead of teaching men NOT to rape. Sad reality indeed! I too blogged about this issue from an angle of beinmg raped from mere appearance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well JAnine, I think there are campaigns making an awareness that if men do rape, they will be punished. The fact is that, its not only men who rape, what about women who rape? don't you think they must also be thought the same thing?

      Delete
  18. I think it is up to the society and the justice to play a major role. Severe punishment is needed but then again we wouldn't know about the background of the boys or what in the world gave them such an idea.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I hope so too, and I am sure that you agree with when I am saying that background does not lead anyone to do such crime. Did you know that people sometimes think that when you are from a poor family you do bad thing, but that is not a fact, its just a myth. I just wish that these boys get a severe punishment they could never forget

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't understand what non-verbal communication ques you talking about, because when women say no thats a no. You can't have sex with a woman against her will even though she can have any ques because people have the right to express themselves in anyway without being taken advantage of or getting raped

  21. How can it be stopped if so many campaigns have been done but same thing is being repeated?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The only way for it to be stopped is to let the community do what they want with such people because this is totally unacceptable and humiliate women and what image does it convey for men? I think that campaigns can be launched and open branches everywhere and enable people who have changed from being rapist, robbers and so on to come and share some information about the life in jail
